I had our smart meter removed a few years ago and am so glad I did. Locally, with Duke Energy, if you have a medical exemption, there is no cost to have it removed and have a manual read done. If you have no medical exemption, you can pay a fee (I believe $175) and then a monthly read-out fee of about $15.
